Seward, Alaska, is a port city with about 3,000 or so people living year-round. The population does bloom considerably during the summer, around the cruise ship and the fishing industry.

Amber and I flew, leaving Missouri on September 26th, 2021, for an adventure in Alaska. Amber received a position as the school district’s accounts payable, and I as a K-6 Multi-Grade Classroom Teacher at Takotna Community School in Takotna, AK.

Takotna was a unique place to live. A small community of approximately 30 locals. While most people appear to have been transplanted from somewhere else, they treated Amber and me like foreigners. Most of the community never bothered us, and there seemed to be very little to no crime at all. We did enjoy the beauty of seeing Takotna Mountain, but that was about it.

Amber and I left Takotna, AK in May of 2022 for our new location in McGrath, AK. I took on a new role as a K-12 Itinerant Special Education Provider for the 22-23 school year.

At the time, a community with a nice mixture of Native and Non-Natives, about 300 or so folks. The area features a paved airport, two churches, several community centers, a gas station, a grocery store, a post office, a radio station, and a restaurant. The community clears the snow off the roads everywhere. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the Iron Dog Race come through town.
